If you are wondering about the Black Muslims, but only interested knowing the basics about thier belief system, this book is definatly for you. Tsoukalas has a wonderful gift for writing and telling history. Unlike most books about the NOI, Tsoukalas takes the right approach in describing thier history and belifs. The only book that might do a better job is C. Eric Lincolns book 'The Black Muslims in America' but that book goes into extreme detail within the black Muslim history. Tsoukalas's book is much more basic and to the point. He does what should be done, he tells the facts about the Blacks Muslims without totally bashing them. In his last chapter, he does give a Christian response to the black Muslims, but it is in no way a bashing of their belief system. I would definatly recomend this book to anyone who wants a short but well written explaination of the Black Muslims.

Tsoukalas provides well-written, brief background and Christian evaluation of Nation of Islam, which most of us Americans hear much about and little understand.

He disbands the myths that it is Muslim. It differs as he carefully points out in its basic disagreement that W.D. Fard is Allah (God), and that he is a man, a black man. As anyone familiar with Islam is aware, this is totally against their view of Allah.

In a procession of messengers, beginning with Elihah Muhammed, continuing to Malcom X, then to Louis Farrakan, the author provides intro to this development and its implications.

Also, he provides advice on how a Christian can witness, given God provides the opportunity. This is very useful, as well as the accompanying discussion on a Christian evaluation of NOI. He is lacking on an understanding of the communication of Chrsit's two natures, which would alleviate the problems in this evaluation.

A good introductory read to the subject.

A great American Diarie book. Although at times it got a little boring, the book was exciting at times. I never really knew what the test were like when people came in to America but this book tells you. Nell is scared the Granny rose won't pass the tests. if she doesn't, then Nell will have to go back to Ireland and may never see her father. A good book.

Nell Dunne is scared. She and her mother, baby sister, older brother, and grandmother have endured the long journey from Ireland to the United States to be reuinted with her father after two long years. But before they can rejoin him, they will have to go through Ellis Island. Nell is worried that her grandmother, who is weak and forgetfull, will not pass the inspection. If Granny Rose fails the inspection, Nell will have to accompany her back to Ireland to care for her, and she will never see her father. This book was a detailed account of what a young girl coming to America might have encountered on Ellis Island in the early 1900s. I highly reccomend this excellant addition to the American Diaries series.

You should situate the whole thing as far north as the Canadian Northern teritories.

The food preparations in the book are meant seriously........ There are still people living in this world that dont have a super market at every other corner........

I like to read cookery books, and I even found information on how to cook a polar bear in this book. It also tells how to prepare all kind of rodents, squirrels, black and grizzly bears, elk, whale , seal and lynx(bobcat), reindeer(sorry Santa).

What about Beaver in sour cream????????Or Stuffed Moose Heart?????? Or could I please You more with a muskrat meat loaf?????????Recipes for Acorn soup and pine tip tea (rich in vitamine C) are also found in the book.

Besides these - in our eyes strange -recipes it also tells how to bake a cake (with or without bear fat) or glaze carrots, and caloric values of stuff. Did you know that 1tbs of whale blubber contains 112 calories?

The book also neatly provides us with the official hunting regulations for the North West Territories. As a non resident You must pay $510 in stamp and Trophy fees for a polar bear, and you can only hunt them if they're not accompanied by young. Grizzly bears are cheaper

If you can lay your hands on a copy of this book, dont hesitate to buy it.

This is perhaps the best cookbook a Northerner could own. Yes, it does feature such delicacies as Jellied Moose Nose and Hawaiian Caribou Tongue, but it also contains a wealth of information on how to prepare northern fish, wild berries, tundra greens, and other local (and free) victuals.

An added bonus are the brilliant illustrations by James Simpkins.

Observers in Control Systems is a practical guide to observers, and is especially oriented towards motion control.

The best in its subject area that I have read and comparable in impact with Keegan's Face Of Battle.

This is one of the best books ever written on the experience of the common soldier in World War II (or of any war). Ellis shows remarkable range in examining the reaction of Allied soldiers in WW II (in Africa, Europe, and Asia) to the experience and stress of combat and war. There is not a false note in this book. Thorough, moving, insightful, and complete.

This book is Wagner's seminal essay where he fully explains his principles and opinions regarding opera and music. If you like his operas, this is the one book that is a must have on your reading shelf.

In 1893, the London Wagner Society published an English translation of Wagner's 8 volume collected works. This is volume 2 of that series. It contains the full text of "Oper und Drama", translated as "Opera and Drama". Our old friend, William Ashton Ellis, did the stilted but essential English translations.

Much of what Wagner wrote has nothing to do with music, and quite a large portion is pretty forgettable. However, this book is important, and goes a long way toward helping you understand his music.

Being a fan of books about the area I live in and especilly the part of the state that I love to roam around in This book was a real read. A lot of familiar names both people and places made it even more intresting.

This book tells it all in regards to a part of the west that is not generaly known. H.F. Ellis' Papers of .J. Wentworth, BA is a wry comic classic which presents the 'letters' of an unmarried teacher who comments on education, teaching methods, and obstinate pupils. A fun gift for any who appreciates humor, literature and the perils of teaching.

H. F. Ellis' book is a true classic of written English humor. His work compares favorabily with the work of Jerome K. Jerome and P.G. Wodehouse. Ellis' dry sense of humor and excellent use of language makes this one of the funniest books I've read in a long time. At first, seeing the snooty pretensioness of schoolmaster A.J. Wentworth constantly pricked and deflated is hysterical, but before long you'll be on his side and saying aloud between the laughs "Poor, poor chap!"

I read "Parvana's Journey" over Thanksgiving break. This book, the sequel to Ellis' "The Breadwinner", continues the story of Parvana, a young Afghan girl who disguises herself as a boy in order to help her family survive. In this one, Parvana's been separated from her mom and siblings, and her father has just died. She travels across Afghanistan, picking up refugees as she goes along (including an infant boy, a boy missing a leg, and a girl who believes she is magically protected against mine fields). This installment was even more heartwrenching than the last and it is truly the perfect novel to read at Thanksgiving time - it makes you remember what you should be thankful for.

This book is an emotional loopty-loop. It really brought to life the poverty and hunger that "we" feel is so far away...death,,,killing,,,mourning,,,sorrow and graves were plentyful in this book. It shows the world the social issues from a resident's perspective. Although there were many sad times in the book, it was well written and deserves to be a bestseller. (hopefully this book will push ppl to join peace corps. to Afganistan)
